LeetCode 674 - Longest Continuous Increasing Subsequence

https://leetcode.com/problems/longest-continuous-increasing-subsequence/
Given an unsorted array of integers, find the length of longest continuous increasing subsequence (subarray).
Example 1:
Input: [1,3,5,4,7]
Output: 3
Explanation: The longest continuous increasing subsequence is [1,3,5], its length is 3.
Even though [1,3,5,7] is also an increasing subsequence, it's not a continuous one where 5 and 7 are separated by 4.
Example 2:
Input: [2,2,2,2,2]
Output: 1
Explanation: The longest continuous increasing subsequence is [2], its length is 1.
Note: Length of the array will not exceed 10,000

LeetCode 1014 - Best Sightseeing Pair

https://leetcode.com/problems/best-sightseeing-pair/
Given an array A of positive integers, A[i] represents the value of the i-th sightseeing spot, and two sightseeing spots i and j have distance j - i between them.
The score of a pair (i < j) of sightseeing spots is (A[i] + A[j] + i - j) : the sum of the values of the sightseeing spots, minus the distance between them.
Return the maximum score of a pair of sightseeing spots.

Example 1:
Input: [8,1,5,2,6]
Output: 11
Explanation: i = 0, j = 2, A[i] + A[j] + i - j = 8 + 5 + 0 - 2 = 11

Note:
  1. 2 <= A.length <= 50000
  2. 1 <= A[i] <= 1000

The goal is to keep track of:
  • Maximum So far and add it to the cur_cell and maintain maximum result
  • Here, max_so_far contains : A[i] + i
Original Given Formula : A[i] + A[j] + i - j
  • Break in two parts : A[i] + i and A[j] -j
  • Keep MAX_VALUE of first part among the elements seen so far
  • Add the current element to max_so_far and check the result is changing or not
  • Also, keep updating the max_so_far at each step
    public int maxScoreSightseeingPair(int[] a) {
        int max_so_far = a[0];
        int result = 0;
        for(int i=1;i<a.length;i++){
            result = Math.max(result, max_so_far + a[i] - i);
            max_so_far = Math.max(max_so_far, a[i] + i);
        }
        return result;
    }
https://leetcode.com/problems/best-sightseeing-pair/discuss/260850/JavaC%2B%2BPython-One-Pass
Count the current best score in all previous sightseeing spot.
Note that, as we go further, the score of previous spot decrement.

Explanation

cur will record the best score that we have met.
We iterate each value a in the array A,
update res by max(res, cur + a)
Also we can update cur by max(cur, a).
Note that when we move forward,
all sightseeing spot we have seen will be 1 distance further.
So for the next sightseeing spot cur = Math.max(cur, a) **- 1**
It's kinds of like, "A near neighbor is better than a distant cousin."
https://leetcode.com/problems/best-sightseeing-pair/discuss/260884/C%2B%2B-O(n)-best-time-to-buy-and-sell-stock
It's similar to Best Time to Buy and Sell Stock, but instead of min price, we track max value, and our max value decays every step due to the distance penalty.

Solution

  • Track the maximum value of A[i] as max_i.
  • Every turn, decrement max_ito account for j - i.
  • Track and return the maximum score.
    public int maxScoreSightseeingPair(int[] A) {
        int max = A[0];
        int res = Integer.MIN_VALUE;
        for (int i = 1; i < A.length; i++) {
            max = Math.max(max, A[i - 1] + i - 1);
            res = Math.max(res, max + A[i] - i);
        }
        return res;

LeetCode 65 - Valid Number

https://leetcode.com/problems/valid-number/
Validate if a given string can be interpreted as a decimal number.
Some examples:
"0" => true
" 0.1 " => true
"abc" => false
"1 a" => false
"2e10" => true
" -90e3   " => true
" 1e" => false
"e3" => false
" 6e-1" => true
" 99e2.5 " => false
"53.5e93" => true
" --6 " => false
"-+3" => false
"95a54e53" => false
Note: It is intended for the problem statement to be ambiguous. You should gather all requirements up front before implementing one. However, here is a list of characters that can be in a valid decimal number:
  • Numbers 0-9
  • Exponent - "e"
  • Positive/negative sign - "+"/"-"
  • Decimal point - "."
Of course, the context of these characters also matters in the input.
http://www.cnblogs.com/grandyang/p/4084408.html
    bool isNumber(string s) {
        bool num = false, numAfterE = true, dot = false, exp = false, sign = false;
        int n = s.size();
        for (int i = 0; i < n; ++i) {
            if (s[i] == ' ') {
                if (i < n - 1 && s[i + 1] != ' ' && (num || dot || exp || sign)) return false;
            } else if (s[i] == '+' || s[i] == '-') {
                if (i > 0 && s[i - 1] != 'e' && s[i - 1] != ' ') return false;
                sign = true;
            } else if (s[i] >= '0' && s[i] <= '9') {
                num = true;
                numAfterE = true;
            } else if (s[i] == '.') {
                if (dot || exp) return false;
                dot = true;
            } else if (s[i] == 'e') {
                if (exp || !num) return false;
                exp = true;
                numAfterE = false;
            } else return false;
        }
        return num && numAfterE;
    }

All we need is to have a couple of flags so we can process the string in linear time:
We start with trimming.
  • If we see [0-9] we reset the number flags.
  • We can only see . if we didn't see e or ..
  • We can only see e if we didn't see e but we did see a number. We reset numberAfterE flag.
  • We can only see + and - in the beginning and after an e
  • any other character break the validation.
At the and it is only valid if there was at least 1 number and if we did see an e then a number after it as well.
So basically the number should match this regular expression:
[-+]?(([0-9]+(.[0-9]*)?)|.[0-9]+)(e[-+]?[0-9]+)?

LeetCode 968 - Binary Tree Cameras

https://leetcode.com/problems/binary-tree-cameras/
Given a binary tree, we install cameras on the nodes of the tree.
Each camera at a node can monitor its parent, itself, and its immediate children.
Calculate the minimum number of cameras needed to monitor all nodes of the tree.

Example 1:

Input: [0,0,null,0,0]
Output: 1
Explanation: One camera is enough to monitor all nodes if placed as shown.
Example 2:

Input: [0,0,null,0,null,0,null,null,0]
Output: 2
Explanation: At least two cameras are needed to monitor all nodes of the tree. The above image shows one of the valid configurations of camera placement.

Note:
  1. The number of nodes in the given tree will be in the range [1, 1000].
  2. Every node has value 0

f(i,0)f(i,0) 表示 ii 结点被父结点监控的所需要的最少摄像头数量;同理,f(i,1)f(i,1) 和 f(i,2)f(i,2) 分别表示被自己监控和被某个儿子结点监控所需要的最少摄像头数量。
我们通过递归的方式来更新 ff 数组;对于叶结点,f(i,0)=0f(i,0)=0,f(i,1)=1f(i,1)=1,f(i,2)=+∞f(i,2)=+∞。
对非叶结点转移时,f(i,0)f(i,0) 不能取儿子结点中被父结点监控,所以很容易写出 f(i,0)=min(f(j1,1)+f(j2,2))+min(f(j2,1)+f(j2,2))f(i,0)=min(f(j1,1)+f(j2,2))+min(f(j2,1)+f(j2,2));f(i,1)f(i,1) 可以取儿子结点中三种状态的最小值之和;f(i,2)f(i,2) 则需要某个儿子必须取“被自己监控”,其余取“被自己监控”和“被某个儿子监控”中的最小值。
最终答案为,min(f(root,1),f(root,2))min(f(root,1),f(root,2))。

1. 当前子节点有没有被cover(没有被cover的话,父节点就一定要cover当前子节点)

2. 当前子节点有没有放camera(放了的话父节点就被cover了)

1. 子节点没被cover(子节点一定没有camera)

Let's try to cover every node, starting from the top of the tree and working down. Every node considered must be covered by a camera at that node or some neighbor.
Because cameras only care about local state, we can hope to leverage this fact for an efficient solution. Specifically, when deciding to place a camera at a node, we might have placed cameras to cover some subset of this node, its left child, and its right child already.
Algorithm
Let solve(node) be some information about how many cameras it takes to cover the subtree at this node in various states. There are essentially 3 states:
  • [State 0] Strict subtree: All the nodes below this node are covered, but not this node.
  • [State 1] Normal subtree: All the nodes below and including this node are covered, but there is no camera here.
  • [State 2] Placed camera: All the nodes below and including this node are covered, and there is a camera here (which may cover nodes above this node).
Once we frame the problem in this way, the answer falls out:
  • To cover a strict subtree, the children of this node must be in state 1.
  • To cover a normal subtree without placing a camera here, the children of this node must be in states 1 or 2, and at least one of those children must be in state 2.
  • To cover the subtree when placing a camera here, the children can be in any state.

X. Greedy
https://leetcode.com/problems/binary-tree-cameras/discuss/211180/JavaC%2B%2BPython-Greedy-DFS
Consider a node in the tree.
It can be covered by its parent, itself, its two children.
Four options.
Consider the root of the tree.
It can be covered by left child, or right child, or itself.
Three options.
Consider one leaf of the tree.
It can be covered by its parent or by itself.
Two options.
If we set a camera at the leaf, the camera can cover the leaf and its parent.
If we set a camera at its parent, the camera can cover the leaf, its parent and its sibling.
We can see that the second plan is always better than the first.
Now we have only one option, set up camera to all leaves' parent.
Here is our greedy solution:
  1. Set cameras on all leaves' parents, thenremove all covered nodes.
  2. Repeat step 1 until all nodes are covered.

Explanation:

Apply a recusion function dfs.
Return 0 if it's a leaf.
Return 1 if it's a parent of a leaf, with a camera on this node.
Return 2 if it's coverd, without a camera on this node.
For each node,
if it has a child, which is leaf (node 0), then it needs camera.
if it has a child, which is the parent of a leaf (node 1), then it's covered.
If it needs camera, then res++ and we return 1.
If it's covered, we return 2.
Otherwise, we return 0.
    int res = 0;
    public int minCameraCover(TreeNode root) {
        return (dfs(root) < 1 ? 1 : 0) + res;
    }

    public int dfs(TreeNode root) {
        if (root == null) return 2;
        int left = dfs(root.left), right = dfs(root.right);
        if (left == 0 || right == 0) {
            res++;
            return 1;
        }
        return left == 1 || right == 1 ? 2 : 0;
    }
  1. remove all leaf nodes.
  2. res += (number of current leaf nodes)
  3. remove all leaf nodes. (parent of actual leaf)
  4. remove all leaf nodes. (parent of the node with camera)
  5. Go back to step 1.

}
private int dfs(TreeNode root) {
if (root == null) return NO_NEED_CAMERA;
if (root.left == null && root.right == null) return LEAF;
int l = dfs(root.left);
int r = dfs(root.right);
if (l == LEAF || r == LEAF) {
res++;
return HAS_CAMERA;
} else if (l == HAS_CAMERA || r == HAS_CAMERA) {
return NO_NEED_CAMERA;
} else {
return LEAF;
}
}

 * Approach: Divide and Conquer with Greedy
 * 基本上所有 树 类型的题目,都是差不多这个套路。
 * 不过本题难点在于能不能想出这个贪心的处理。
 * (其实也不难,因为在推理状态的时候,其实挺自然地就能想出来了)
 * 本道题目其实算是 Distribute Coins in Binary Tree 的一个升级变形题。
 *
 * 首先我们定义一个 Func 作用为:在当前node的子树中放置照相机,并保证每个节点都能被监控到。
 * 同时,定义一个全局变量 res,每次放置相机的时候,加上需要的个数即可。
 * 然后,我们就会遇到本题的难点:
 *  放置相机之后,其能够监听 当前节点 + 左右孩子 + 节点的父亲。
 * 因此我们需要知道在 Func 处理之后,每个节点的状态是什么。(照相机到底放在哪个点上)
 * 而放置方法就用到了贪心的策略:
 * 因为放在 叶子节点的父亲节点 上能监控到的点比放在 叶子节点 上要多,
 *  故我们在放置相机的时候,会选择放在 left.parent 上。
 *  然后将已经被监控的节点去除掉,再考虑未被监控的点。
 *  这其实也就是 递归调用 的一个过程。
 * 因此这里定义:
 *  return 0:代表当前节点是 叶子 节点
 *  return 1:代表当前节点是 放置相机 的节点(即叶子节点的父亲)
 *  return 2:代表当前节点是 已经被监控 的节点(可以理解为放置了相机的节点的父亲)
 * 然后,只有当 left == 0 || right == 0.即当前节点为 leaf.parent 时,我们需要放置相机,此时 res++
 * 最后,值得注意的一点是:
 *  当我们对 root 处理之后,我们需要查询 root 是否已经被监控到。
 *  如果没有的话,我们需要多放置一台相机来监控 root.
 *  eg. 整颗树只有一个节点,此时我们对 root 处理完后发现,dfs(root) 返回值为 0
 *  代表去除被监控的点后,root作为leaf还未被监控,此时我们需要对结果加一。
 *

    public int minCameraCover(TreeNode root) {
        int state = dfs(root);
        return res + (state == 0 ? 1 : 0);
    }

    // Return 0 if it's a leaf.
    // Return 1 if it's a parent of a leaf, with a camera on this node
    // Return 2 if it's coverd, without a camera on this node
    // (like the parent node of a node with camera)
    private int dfs(TreeNode root) {
        if (root == null) {
            return 2;
        }
        int left = dfs(root.left);
        int right = dfs(root.right);
        if (left == 0 || right == 0) {
            res++;
            return 1;
        }
        return left == 1 || right == 1 ? 2 : 0;
    }

Instead of trying to cover every node from the top down, let's try to cover it from the bottom up - considering placing a camera with the deepest nodes first, and working our way up the tree.
If a node has its children covered and has a parent, then it is strictly better to place the camera at this node's parent.
If a node has children that are not covered by a camera, then we must place a camera here. Additionally, if a node has no parent and it is not covered, we must place a camera here.

  int ans;
  Set<TreeNode> covered;

  public int minCameraCover(TreeNode root) {
    ans = 0;
    covered = new HashSet();
    covered.add(null);

    dfs(root, null);
    return ans;
  }

  public void dfs(TreeNode node, TreeNode par) {
    if (node != null) {
      dfs(node.left, node);
      dfs(node.right, node);

      if (par == null && !covered.contains(node) || !covered.contains(node.left) || !covered.contains(node.right)) {
        ans++;
        covered.add(node);
        covered.add(par);
        covered.add(node.left);
        covered.add(node.right);
      }
    }
  }

    int dfsmin(TreeNode node, boolean parentVisited, boolean force)
public int minCameraCover(TreeNode root) {
    return dfsmin(root, false, false, new HashMap<>());
}

// each dfsmin will care about how to cover the current node
int dfsmin(TreeNode node, boolean parentVisited, boolean force, Map<State, Integer> map) {
    if(null == node) return 0;

    State state = new State(node, parentVisited, force);
    // note we have to use the state as the key, use the node as the key will give wa
    // because each node is called multiple times with different state
    if(map.containsKey(state)) {
        return map.get(state);
    }

    if(parentVisited) {
        // case 1: visit current node
        int min1 = 1 + dfsmin(node.left, true, false, map) + dfsmin(node.right, true, false, map);
        // case 2 : not visit current node (because current node is covered by parent)
        int min2 = dfsmin(node.left, false, false, map) + dfsmin(node.right, false, false, map);
        int min = Math.min(min1, min2);
        map.put(state, min);

        return min;
    }
    else {
        // case 1: visit current node
        int min = 1 + dfsmin(node.left, true, false, map) + dfsmin(node.right, true, false, map);

        if(!force) {
            // case 2: not visit cur, visit left (if left exist) so that left can cover cur
            if(node.left != null) {
                int min2 = dfsmin(node.left, false, true, map) + dfsmin(node.right, false, false, map);
                min = Math.min(min, min2);
            }
            if(node.right != null) {
                int min3 = dfsmin(node.left, false, false, map) + dfsmin(node.right, false, true, map);
                min = Math.min(min, min3);
            }
        }

        map.put(state, min);

        return min;
    }
}

static class State {
    private TreeNode node;
    private boolean parentVisited;
    private boolean force;

        this.node = node;
